So I’ve been obsessed with the puff stitch lately. It really is an easy stitch and once you get it down you can crank out a hat in no time. I’ve been making a bunch of these puff stitch beanies for my upcoming craft fair in October. This pattern is super versatile and is easy to work up in different sizes. I like to use worsted weight or bulky yarn to make them. Materials: 5mm crochet hook One skein worsted weight yarn. The Mustard hat pictured is Urban Yarn by Loops & Threads and I LOVE it! Yarn needle PomPom (optional) Special Stitches- Puff Stitch: YO, insert hook into indicated stitch, YO, pull up a loop, (3 loops on hook) YO, insert hook into same stitch, YO pull up a loop (5 loops on hook), YO, insert hook into same stitch, YO pull up a loop (7 loops on hook) YO and pull through all 7 loops on hook. Pattern: Ch 9. Sc back down. (8sc) Ch 1, turn, *Sc 8 in back loop only, Ch 1, turn* repeat until the brim fits around your head (approx. 22inches for adult head) Slip stitch the begining row and last row together. Make sure seam is turned to the inside before the next step. Sl St to the top of brim, ch 1 . Now work an even amount of Sc around the brim. The amount isn’t important as long as its an even number. sl st to first sc. Ch 1. puff stitch in same space, *ch 1, skip one stitch, puff stitch in following. repeat from * around. slip stitch to top of beginning puff stitch. Slip stitch into first ch space. Ch 1, puff stitch into same space, *ch 1, puff stitch into next ch 1 space. repeat from * around. sl st to top of first puff stitch. Continue this until you reach the length of hat you want. cut yarn. I recommend sewing the top of the hat closed by weaving in and out of every other puff stitch and pulling tight. Then sew securely on the inside of the hat. Use this yarn to sew your pompom on as well! This hat is using worsted weight: This one I used bulky yarn: You can see the yellow and black hat (I call it my Charlie Brown hat) is a bit chunkier. Theres also a couple different ways to sew up the hat. You can continue decreasing the puff stitches towards the end, or you can weave your yarn in and out through the last round and sew it shut. I tried both ways and ended up liking sewing the hat shut better. In the following picture of my matching mom and daughter hats I sewed the top one and decreased the bottom one. I just think sewing gives it a cleaner look.
